NINE
Cedric lay face down across the pullout mattress in my office, fast asleep. His hair spread over freshly painted henna tattoos on his back. One graceful arm curled around the spot Iâd vacated upon rising. Dressed in my robe, I sat at the computer, placing orders for barware, while he slept on past sunset, as young vampires are wont to do. Every now and then, I just had to stop working and enjoy the sight, especially since he didnât know. In relaxed moments, when he set down the rakish image he so carefully cultivated, he looked most god-like. He stirred and rolled onto his side, revealing the cobra branded into his flesh. Something rearing below his waist also suggested a cobra.
âAh, the prince awakens,â I commented.
He stretched and yawned. A lyrical ripple of muscle played under his skin. âNine p.m. is too early on a summer night to be working.â
âI need less sleep than I used to. Youâre still young.â
He dropped his voice to that sexy rumble. âCome back to bed.â
âYouâre a terrible distraction.â
Strong fingers wrapped around my wrist. âI know.â
He tugged, and I went. Every so often, during the act, heâd chant in that eerie singsong. Iâd come to accept this behavior as one of his quirks, like it was his way of talking dirty. The words seemed to turn him on in a big way. His lovemaking grew more intense, more purposeful on his part.
After heâd treated me to a series of positions that might have put a mortal woman in traction, I rolled off of him, chuckling. âYou outdid yourself that time.â
Cedric fell back, panting. My fingertip traced the henna swirls on his chest as it rose and fell with his breath.
âThe greater pleasure I bring,â he said, âthe more the Motherâs power is conferred upon you.â
Although I still found the religious part of this relationship complete hokum, I had to admit it wasnât bad to be the avatar of a goddess and have a personal devotee at my service. My mouth took over on his body where my fingers left off. I pierced his throat to imbibe his essence. Blood gushed into my mouth and bathed my innards in warmth. Bullets of pleasure ripped through my cells. A burst of light flashed behind my eyes, and once more, the image of a restless tiger stalked through the jungle of my consciousness. The beast inhabiting my lover circled round and round me. His fangs entered my neck. We clutched at each otherâs bodies, drinking until our hearts beat as one and then collapsed in each otherâs arms, listening to the mutual hammering.
After a quick shower, Cedric left to fetch warmed blood for me from the basement kitchen. Upon his return, he curled around me on the mattress as I sipped from the insulated mug heâd brought.
âI need an artist,â I told him.
âWhat sort of artist?â
âSomeone who can paint murals. Now that the walls are done, they need something with pizzazz. What about your friend Marta? I liked her portrait of you.
